First ecologically pure airport of a southern hemisphere

International airport of New Zealand Christchurch became the second “carbon-neutral” airport in the world. It is the first airport it the first airport in southern hemisphere, which has received “the green letter”. Earlier such certificate has been given Swedish airport LVF in Stockholm. The certificate speaks that carbon emission into environment is minimal. Harmful gas emission from planes is not included.
After careful checks and detailed measurements of research, carried out by institute Landcare, airport Christchurch International has received Carbon Zero certificate.
For reception of carbon zero certificate, the airport should measure a level of carbon emission, develop the plan on its reduction and trace results while they will not come up to zero mark. For preservation of the certificate the airport should spend annual gaugings of carbon emission and give the report. So, the company has reduced quantity of harmful emissions and widely applied programs of dust processing. They have transformed diesel heating systems and used an old road covering for repair of runways.
Minister on tourism hopes, that the new status will attract more foreign visitors to the country, in fact, the theme of ecological compatibility is very important now.
In 2006-2007 Airport Christchurch International has received 5,5 million visitors .
