Today in England the interdiction on smoking in public places has come into force. Now it is spread across all Great Britain: Northern Ireland was the first on this way and now Scotland and the Wales have followed Ireland’s example.
As BBC informs, henceforth it is forbidden to smoke in such places, as state and public institutions, restaurants, pubs (pubs), clubs, schools, hospitals and prisons.
Authorities explain the decision as health care of the nation: it is a question of attempt to lower quantity of the death caused by so-called “passive smoking”. In British doctors’ opinion, almost 600 people die from smoking annually.
For infringement of an interdiction the penalty at the rate of 50 pounds sterling (almost 100 dollars) is stipulated. However, if the penalty will be paid within 15 days it will decrease up to 30 pounds. If the case of such smoker will be transferred into the court, and he will be recognized guilty, he will pay 200 pounds of fine. For the companies and the organizations, breaking the law, the sum of the penalty will make almost 2,5 thousand pounds.
Meanwhile business has apprehended an interdiction on smoking ambiguously. In Ireland new rules have started to operate in 2004. There at once, though and for a short while, incomes of pubs and the tobacco companies have fallen. After introduction of an interdiction the quantity of smokers was reduced to 2 %, but in a year it has returned on a former level. However, profits of pubs, bars and restaurants have significantly reduced.
Englishmen, having studied experience of neighbors, started to prepare in advance. As the chapter of a network of pubs Christie and Co Colin Wellstead has declared, figures of sales would fall on five percent, but then people will get used to new rules and new visitors, who were frightened off earlier with the filled with smoke atmosphere of a typical English pub will come.
However, the new law has also supporters among owners of pubs. Some of pubs’ owners will be pleased to work in much healthier environment.
